Hola Amigos,
It is now 5 days until my South American adventure and both nerves and excitement are starting to kick in. Everyday I cross things off my 'To Do' list and every day it seems to grow bigger. It's hard to imagine that I will ever get it all done. Nonetheless, time is ticking, and regardless on the status of my list, I'm off to Buenos Aires early next week. It's kind of surreal to think that I will be crossing the equator and immersing myself in this massive, vibrant, and magical city in just a few days. The process of trip preparation, the lists, the plans, the checking and double checking, always feel strange until you're actually on the plane and there's no turning back. Really, however, it doesn't hit you until you step out of the airport and are faced with this place that is so different from what you know and from what you expect. There is no way to prepare for that first day in a new city, in a new country. There is no way to know the beat of the street, the currency, the attitude, the pace. There is no way to wipe that 'i'm a tourist who just got off the plane' look from your face. So, you try your best to look like you know what you're doing. Try your best to be low-pro. Hope that not too many people talk to you. Hope that metro system is easy to navigate. Hope that you can make it to your first destination (be it hostel, hotel, or friend) relatively undisturbed. Try to subdue the look of wonderment, or confussion, or elation, or of absolute fear. Play it cool.
Five days to go... Yay!!

Hi Amazing Amy,
ReplyDeleteWanderlust-- how appropriate a title for your blog, and how appropriate for the type of person you are. Not only in your travels, but in your approach to life and what it offers. It describes your openness to new things, your willingness to put yourself on the line in unfamiliar circumstances and environments, and your acceptance of all things different. Your spirit of adventure and self-confidence to tackle these unknowns make you an exceptional person, and we are proud of you. We know that this trip, like all of your other journeys will be rich in experience, full of memorable people and places, and life-defining. We wish you safety and good health, above all else, but additionally, we hope that your expectations are exceeded in every way. We love you and want you to return happy and fulfilled. Love ya, toots. Dad and Mom
